COLORADO CONVENTION CENTER NAMED MOST INNVOATIVE CONVENTION CENTER FOR GREEN INITIATIVES
Readers Vote the Colorado Convention Center Number #1
The Colorado Convention Center (CCC) is excited to announce that they were named by readers of Trade Show Executive Magazine as having the Most Innovative Green Initiatives by a Convention Center, beating out Chicago’s McCormick Place and the Sands Expo in Las Vegas.
Nearly 1,900 TSE readers cast online ballots for the newest technologies and ideas that they felt would make the organizing and management of trade shows a little easier, or possibly usher in a breakthrough that would ripple throughout the industry. Voting continued steadily from July 8th through the mid-night deadline of July 23rd. This was the 11th year for the awards.
The CCC, managed by SMG and owned by the City and County of Denver, has been a leader in sustainability since 2007. Efforts are focused in the areas of: waste management, energy conservation, air, water quality and conservation, procurement and stakeholder engagement.
SMG/CCC sustainability programs divert 57% of waste from landfills. Of these materials, 307,739 lbs. were donated for reuse or repurposing, including coordinating the donation of more than 9,500 lbs. of materials to over 10 local non-profits from a single event.
Continuing our energy efficient lighting and equipment upgrades has achieved an energy savings of over 1,500,000 kWh in 2012. This was achieved by replacing lighting, hot water pumps and air handler units with more efficient systems.
In addition, in December 2012 the CCC became the first venue worldwide to achieve certification to the ASTM/APEX Sustainable Meeting Standard for a Venue.
John Adams, General Manager of the Colorado Convention Center and Regional Vice President for SMG, said, “This independent recognition adds to our continued commitment to being an industry leader in sustainability efforts”. In 2010, the Colorado Convention Center was awarded certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB), awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The achievement makes the Colorado Convention Center the largest LEED certified building in the region. Kent Rice, executive director of Denver Arts & Venues Denver, the city agency that manages the SMG Contract for the CCC said “We’re proud that the staff of SMG at the Colorado Convention Center represents our City in providing real sustainability.”
