Center for Social Innovation/Colorado Coalition for the Homeless Joint Meeting
Event Description
The Center for Social Innovation is a diverse group of social scientists, educators, consumers, and clinicians with knowledge of the needs of our nation’ s most vulnerable populations, and the providers and systems of care that serve them.
At the juncture of extreme poverty and homelessness, people struggle to hold their lives together in the face of mental illness, substance use, isolation, and trauma. This is where we work. We use science and technology to create and share new solutions to the most vexing human problems.
Through rigorous research, we learn which services and supports each person requires to regain stability and return to life in the community. We identify what people need to maintain their independence and dignity.
We bring this knowledge to providers with tools and training that take advantage of new technologies and learning techniques. We help human service organizations define and carry out their missions, and optimize the skills of their workforces to meet the challenges ahead.
We are transforming human services for people with the greatest need.

Event Description
Welcome to the Environment, Safety, and Occupational Health Training Symposium. This school reflects the Air Force Chief of Staff's transformation directive for an integrated ESOH Management System world-wide. Note that this is not a conference. This is a school that supports over 1,000 installation-level students who have the most impact on ESOH at the base and is done in a model AFSO21 cost saving program.
The symposium consolidates like training needs from across six major commands, reducing very costly duplicate efforts, course costs/overhead, while most importantly, significantly reducing the training footprint on AF operations. The symposium focuses on the operational (real-time) needs of personnel from Air Combat Command (ACC), AF Space Command (AFSPC), Air Mobility Command (AMC), AF Reserve Command (AFRC), Air National Guard (ANG), AF Global Strike Command (AFGSC) and Air Education and Training Command (AETC). Students include aircraft and ground systems maintenance, supply, transportation and storage, contracting, legal and public affairs, services, civil engineering, safety, and health.
This school is not open to the public. There is NO on-site registration. Students are registered by invitation only based on validated training need in their mission area. See "Who Can Attend" on event website for more information.
The symposium is sponsored by ACC, AFSPC, AETC, ANG, AMC, AFGSC and AFRC in partnership with the AF Center for Engineering and the Environment (AFCEE), the AF Institute of Technology (AFIT), and with support from the AF School of Aerospace Medicine, U.S. Department of Labor OSHA Training Institute, and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Instruction is provided by national academia from DoD, across Federal and state government, universities, and international industry.
Approximately 500 industry experts in ESOH support services and equipment supplement the event with the latest in technologies and ESOH information.

Saturday, February 25th, 2012
On Sale Friday, October 28th at 10:00 am
Live Nation welcomes BRIAN REGAN to the Wells Fargo Theatre on Saturday, February 25th, 2012 at 8:00 pm.
Critics and peers agree: Brian Regan has distinguished himself as one of the premier comedians in the country. The perfect balance of sophisticated writing and physicality, Brian fills theaters nationwide with fervent fans that span generations.
In 2010, Brian released his highly anticipated second album, “All By Myself,” as a digital download only available through his website. Releasing two critically acclaimed hour Comedy Central specials and DVD’s in as many years - 2008’s “The Epitome of Hyperbole,” and 2007’s “Brian Regan Standing Up” - Brian has set a standard of excellence that others continually try to follow. “The Epitome of Hyperbole” made its CMT debut on March 9.
Brian’s non-stop theater tour has visited more than 80 cities each year since 2005 and continues through 2011. It is the quality of his material, relatable to a wide audience and revered by his peers, which continues to grow Brian’s fan base. In March of 2010, Brian broke the record for the most consecutive shows by a comedian at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City with five sold out performances. The previous record was four shows set by Jerry Seinfeld in 2005.
With his first appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” in 1995, Brian solidified his place on the show and has now made more than 20 appearances. A dorm room favorite, Brian’s 1997 CD, “Brian Regan Live,” has sold over 150,000 copies and consistently charts in iTunes Top Ten Comedy Albums. Brian’s 2000 “Comedy Central Presents” special continues to be a top viewer choice and Brian’s independently released 2004 DVD, “I Walked on the Moon,” is available at http://www.BrianRegan.com

American Sociological Association Annual Convention
Event Description
Real Utopias: Emancipatory Projects, Institutional Designs, Possible Futures
2012 Annual Meeting Theme: 107th ASA Annual Meeting, August 17-20, Denver, CO
“Real Utopias” seems like an oxymoron: Utopia means “nowhere”—a fantasy world of perfect harmony and social justice. To describe a proposal for social transformation as “utopian” is to dismiss it as an impractical dream outside the limits of possibility. Realists reject such fantasies as a distraction from the serious business of making practical improvements in existing institutions. The idea of real utopias embraces this tension between dreams and practice: “utopia” implies developing clear-headed visions of alternatives to existing institutions that embody our deepest aspirations for a world in which all people have access to the conditions to live flourishing lives; “real” means taking seriously the problem of the viability of the institutions that could move us in the direction of that world. The goal is to elaborate utopian ideals that are grounded in the real potentials of humanity, utopian destinations that have accessible way stations, utopian designs of viable institutions that can inform our practical tasks of navigating a world of imperfect conditions for social change.
Exploring real utopias implies developing a sociology of the possible, not just of the actual. This is a tricky research problem, for while we can directly observe variation in what exists in the world, discussions of possibilities and limits of possibility always involve more speculative and contentious claims about what could be, not just what is. The task of a sociology of real utopias, then, is to develop strategies that enable us to make empirically and theoretically sound arguments about emancipatory possibilities. This opens a wide and challenging agenda for sociology:
- Empirical studies of innovative contemporary institutions and practices around the world that in one way or another prefigure emancipatory alternatives to dominant social structures and institutions. The task here is both to seek out the best and most interesting examples of innovation and to understand the limits, contradictions, and dilemmas which they confront.
- Historical studies of attempts at building real utopias, both for specific institutions and for broader projects of social transformation.
- Analysis of reform proposals for specific institutions—for example, universities, criminal justice, the media, city government, the financial system, food systems, environmental regulation, the Internet, intellectual property, the military, corporations—that focus both on the way a given proposal might help solve pressing current problems and point in the direction of broader real utopian transformations.
- Systematic theoretical models of alternative institutions at both the micro-level and the macro-level, with particular attention to the normative ideals and trade-offs of different institutional designs.
- Studies of the role of utopian thinking in sociological theory, philosophy, and other forms of social thought.
- Research on discourses about social alternatives in the popular imagination and social movements.
- Research on various political processes and social struggles involved in advancing and opposing real utopian transformations.
- Methodological discussions of the problem of studying limits of possibility and the transformations of such limits.
- Explorations of the dilemmas of linking strong normative commitments to empirical research.
The 2012 meeting of the ASA will explore this agenda in the context of the many subfields of sociology. We also welcome proposals for innovative formats for panels and sessions at the annual meeting.
