Pure and Clean and Raw

Marks Aardsma

Marks Aardsma is a Denver based artist and has exhibited work across Colorado as well as the nation. She explores the ontology of painting—the nature of painting in and of itself, investigating the essential properties of painting such as color, line, rhythm, shadow and light. This investigation is done by subtracting from and deconstructing the canvas to reveal its original structure. The simplicity of the canvases highlight line, light, and shadow. Aardmsa defines her work as “pure and clean and raw. The space is physical, not illusory.” Marks transfers this practice to works on paper as well. Her labor-intensive technique favors the nuanced lines and patterns already existing in materials.
