Tail Spin

Erick C. Johnson

Tail Spin was originally installed in 1991 and reinstalled in 2004. These steel and fiberglass structures are suspended above the escalators leading up to the exhibit halls. Artist Erick C. Johnson placed each piece so they dart and swirl around the columns like whirling dust devils, coaxing the viewer to follow and chase each piece. Each of the five sculptures is welded as individual units of sails or shovel forms. The surface of these sculptures are metallic black with their painted skin, acrylic enamel and varied color coats of clear pearl essence (on the larger sail forms). Attendees can enjoy a different form of art while the piece brings depth and diversity to the space.
